HERE ARE THE CHASE & STORM REPORTS FOR THE 2002 SEVERE WEATHER SEASON. NOTE: THIS PAGE WILL BE UNDER CONSTRUCTION AS THE 2002 CHASE SEASON PROGRESES
THE FOLLOWING REPORTS ARE EITHER FROM SEVERE WEATHER REPORTS OR FROM ACTUAL CHASES FROM SEVERE WEATHER THAT HIT TEXHOMA DURING THE 2002 SEVERE WEATHER SEASON. THIS WILL INCLUDE PHOTOGRAPHS OR GRAPHICS. THESE REPORTS ARE ONLY FOR THE TEXHOMA AREA OF WESTERN NORTH TEXAS AND SOUTHWEST OKLAHOMA. THE FOLLOWING COUNTIES ARE INCLUDED IN THE T.A.S.C. CHASE TEAM CHASE AREA. SOME REPORTS MAY ALSO INCLUDE AREAS JUST OUT OF TEXHOMA. JANUARY 23RD COMANCHE GRADY COUNTY STORMS
ON WEDNESDAY JANUARY 23RD A VERY SLIGHT RISK OF SEVERE STORMS WAS FORECAST FOR PARTS OF TEXHOMA. GENERALY SOUTHEAST OF A LINE RUNNING ALONG INTERSTATE 44. THE THREAT WAS PRIMARILY FOR LARGE HAIL AND HIGH WINDS.
A COLD FRONT WAS FORECAST TO MOVE INTO THE AREA DROPPING TEMPERATURES FROM THE UPPER 70S INTO THE LOWER 40S. THIS FRONT WOULD SPARK A GOOD SEVERE WEATHER OUTBREAK IN AND AROUND THE ARKLATEX REGION. WHERE TORNADO AND SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCHES WERE IN EFFECT.
WHILE THERE WERE NO SEVERE WEATHER WATCHES IN EFFECT FOR THE AREA. A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING WAS ISSUED FOR COMANCHE AND GRADY COUNTIES. THIS SEVERE STORM PRODUCED WINDS TO 60 MPH AND HAIL TO THE SIZE OF NICKELS IN MANY AREAS. THERE WAS NO REPORTS OF ANY DAMAGE HOWEVER.
THE STORMS INTENSIFIED IN EASTERN OKLAHOMA AND RACED TO THE NORTHEAST.
MARCH 23RD JEFFERSON COUNTY STORM
ON MONDAY MARCH 25TH A SLIGHT RISK OF SEVERE STORMS WAS FORECAST FOR THAT PART OF TEXHOMA BASICALLY SOUTHEAST OF INTERSTATE 44. THE MAIN SEVERE WEATHER THREAT WAS FOR LARGE HAIL TO QUARTER SIZE.
AT 6:56 AM A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING WAS ISSUED FOR JEFFERSON COUNTY. THIS STORM PRODUCED QUARTER SIZE HAIL 15 MILES SOUTH OF RINGLING OKLAHOMA.
THE STORMS FORMED DUE TO A COLD FRONT THAT WAS MAKING ITS WAS ACROSS TEXHOMA AND THE FRONT HAD SLOWED A BIT ALLOWING STORMS TO FORM ALONG AND JUST NORTH OF THE FRONT. THE THREAT FOR SEVERE WEATHER WOULD DIMINISH AROUND MIDAFTERNOON AND NO OTHER WARNINGS WERE ISSUED. SEVERE THUNDWERSTORM WATCHES WERE ISSUED FOR SOUTHEASTERN OKLAHOMA TILL ABOUT 4PM HOWEVER.
MARCH 29TH STORMS
ON FRIDAY MARCH 29TH A VERY SLIGHT RISK OF SEVERE STORMS WAS FORECAST FOR EXTREMEM SOUTHER PARTS OF TEXHOMA BASICALLY SOUTH AND WEST OF A LINE FROM DECATUR TEXAS TO HASKELL TEXAS. THE MAIN SEVERE WEATHER THREAT WOULD BE FOR LARGE HAIL AND FLASH FLOODING. A FLASH FLOOD WATCH WAS IN EFFECT FOR YOUNG WISE MONTAGUE JACK AND PALO PINTO COUNTIES.
AT ABOUT 11PM SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNINGS WERE ISSUED FOR JACK WISE & PALO PINTO COUNTIES. GOLFBALL SIZE HAIL WAS REPORTED IN JACK COUNTY IN GIBTOWN. HALF DOLLAR SIZE AHIL WAS REPORTED 5 MILES SOUTH OF BRIDGEPORT IN WISE COUNTY AND REPORTS OF NICKEL SIZE HAIL AND WINDS TO 60MPH WERE REPORTED IN PALO PINTO COUNTY.
THESE STORMS FORMED DUE TO A STATIONARY FRONT THAT WAS DRAPED ACROSS SOUTHERN PARTS OF TEXHOMA AND IT INTERACTED WITH A UPPER LEVEL LOW THAT MAVED OUT OF NEW MEXICO. THE STORMS WOULD DIE OUT ABOUT 1AM BUT A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH WAS ISSUED FOR THESE COUNTIES UNTIL 5AM.
MARCH 30TH HASKELL THROCKMORTON STORMS
ON MARCH 30TH A SLIGHT RISK OF SEVERE STORMS WAS FORECAST FOR PARTS OF TEXHOMA. THE SLIGHT RISK AREA WAS BASICALLY SOUTH AND EAST OF A LINE FROM KNOX CITY TEXAS TO DUNCAN OKLAHOMA.
A TORNADO WATCH WAS IN EFFECT FOR YOUNG JACK WISE & PALO PINTO COUNTIES TILL 6PM AND A FLASH FLOOD WATCH WAS ALSO IN EFFECT FOR THESE SAME COUNTIES INCLUDING MONTAGUE.
AT ABOUT 3PM A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING WAS ISSUED FOR HASKELL COUNTY AND SOON AFTER ONE WAS ISSUED FOR THROCKMORTON COUNTY. THESE STORMS WOULD PRODUCE ONLY MARGINAL SEVERE WEATHER WITH NICKEL SIZE HAIL AND WINDS TO 60MPH. THE STORMS WOULD WEAKEN AROUND 6PM.
22 TORNADOES WERE REPORTED ACROSS TEXAS THIS DAY BUT NONE IN TEXHOMA. TORNADO REPORTS CAME IN FROM THE ABILIENE AND HOUSTON AREAS AS WELL AS AREAS OF EAST TEXAS.
THE STORMS FORMED DUE TO AN UPPER LEVEL LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM WHICH MOVED OUT OF NEW MEXICO INTERACTING WITH A STATIONARY FRONT DRAPED ACROSS TEXAS.
APRIL 7TH MODERATE RISK STORMS
ON SUNDAY APRIL 7TH A MODERATE RISK OF SEVERE STORMS WAS FORECAST FOR PARTS OF TEXHOMA. THE MODERATE RISK AREA WAS SOUTH AND WEST OF A LINE FROM CROWELL TEXAS TO ARCHER CITY TEXAS TO DECATUR TEXAS. THE REST OF THE AREA WAS UNDER A SLIGHT RISK OF SEVERE STORMS.
A STRONG STORM SYSTEM WAS FORECAST TO MOVE OUT OF NEW MEXICO AND INTO WEST TEXAS. THIS WOULD FORCE A DRYLINE THROUGH THE MODERATE RISK AREA. A WARM FRON WAS ALSO DRAPPED ACROSS PARTS OF THE AREA. MAINLY FROM WICHITA FALLS TO THE DALLAS FORT WORTH METROPLEX.
AT 1PM A TORNADO WATCH WAS ISSUED FOR OUR SOUTHERN COUNTIES OF HASKELL & THROCKMORTON. THIS WATCH WOULD BE IN EFFECT UNTIL 7PM. STORMS FORMED NEAR ABILIENE AND MOVED INTO HASKELL COUNTY WHERE A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING WAS ISSUED.
A PDS TORNADO WATCH WAS THEN ISSUED FOR YOUNG JACK WISE & PALO PINTO COUNTIES UNTIL 8PM. SKIES BEGAN TO CLEAR IN THIS AREA AND THE ATMOSPHERE BECAME VERY UNSTABLE.
A TORNADO WATCH WAS ISSUED FOR THROCKMORTON COUNTY AS THE STORMS IN HASKELL COUNTY MOVED IN AND A LARGE WEDGE TORNADO DROPPED1O MILES WEST OF THROCKMORTON BUT ONLY STAYED ON THE GROUND FOR A SHORT TIME. MANY FUNNEL CLOUDS WERE REPORTED WITH THIS STORM AND TORNADO WARNINGS WERE ALSO ISSUED FOR HASKELL YOUNG & JACK COUNTIES.
THE T.A.S.C. CHASE TEAM CAUGHT UP WITH THE STORM THAT PRODUCED THE TORNADO IN OLNEY TEXAS. THE SKY WAS VERY DARK WITH NOTICEABLE ROATION BUT THE STORM WAS WRAPPING ITSELF IN RAIN. WE STAYED AHEAD OF THE STORM AS IT MOVED TOWARD JEAN LOVING AND EVENTUALLY JACKSBORO. WE FILMED AN OMINOUS LOOKING ROLL CLOUD ALONG A GUSTFRONT THAT DID HAVE BASEBALL SIZE HAIL AND WINDS TO 94MPH. THE STORM THEN BEGAN TO WEAKEN AS THEY FORMED INTO A SQUALL LINE AND M0VED OUT OF TEXHOMA.
BESIDES THE STORMS MENTIONED ABOVE OTHER SEVERE WEATHER REPORTS CAME IN FROM OTHER COUNTIES. HASKELL COUNTY HAD QUARTER SIZE HAIL AT ROCHESTER AND ALSO 9 MILES EAST OF HASKELL.
BAYLOR COUNTY HAD QUARTER SIZE HAIL 2 MILES NORTH OF BOMARTON.
WICHITA COUNTY HAD NICKEL SIZE HAIL AT ELECTRA.
ARCHER COUNTY HAD QUARTER SIZE HAIL 2 MILES OF ARCHER CITY AND HALF DOLLAR SIZE HAIL 2 MILES NORTH OF WINDTHORST.
CLAY COUNTY REPORTED QUARTER SIZE HAIL ACROSS THE COUNTY INCLUDING 10 MILES WEST OF JOY. 7 MILES SOUTHEAST OF HENRIETTA 60MPH WINDS DOWNED POWERLINES ALONG U.S. 287.
YOUNG COUNTY REPORTED 70MPH WINDS AT OLNEY WHERE ROOFS WERE BLOWN OFF HOUSES AND TREES AND POWERLINES WERE DOWN.
PALO PINTO COUNTY HAD 60 MPH WINDS AT POSSUM KINGDOM LAKE AT THE POSSUM KINGDOM LANDING.
JACK COUNTY HAD 60 MPH WINDS AT VINEYARD WHERE POWERLINES WERE ALSO DOWNED.
WISE MONTAGUE AND JEFFERSON COUNTY IN OKLAHOMA ALSO HAD SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNINGS.

APRIL 12TH TEXHOMA STORMS
ON FRIDAY APRIL 12TH A SLIGHT RISK OF SEVERE STORMS WAS FORECAST FOR ALL OF TEXHOMA. THE SLIGHT RISK AREA WAS SOUTH AND WEST OF A LINE FROM CLINTON TO BINGER TO NORMAN TO ATOKA OKLAHOMA.
AT ABOUT 10AM SEVERE STORMS BEGAN TO FORM ALONG AN OUTFLOW BOUNDARY PRODUCED THE NIGHT BEFORE FROM SEVERE STORMS ACROSS SOUTHERN KANSAS AND NORTHERN OKLAHOMA. THE OUTFLOW BOUNDARY WAS SLOWLY MAKING ITS WAY ACROSS TEXHOMA INTERACTING WITH RICH MOISTURE AND DAYTIME HEATING.
STORMS BEGAN TO FIRE IN GREER COUNTY AND A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING WAS ISSUED. A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH WAS ALSO ISSUED FROM 10AM TILL 3PM FOR MUCH OF TEXHOMA.
THE STORM IN GREER COUNTY PRODUCED QUARTER SIZE HAIL 6 MILES SOUTHEAST OF GRANITE AND THEN MOVED INTO KIOWA COUNTY WHERE NICKEL SIZE HAIL WAS REPORTED AT LONE WOLF AND QUARTER SIZE HAIL WAS REPORTED AT ROOSEVELT AS WELL AS 3 MILES SOUTH OF COOPERTON.
THE STORM THEN MOVED INTO COMANCHE AND CADDO COUNTIES WHERE CYRIL REPORTED QUARTER SIZE HAIL AND LAWTON REPORTED HAIL TO GOLFBALL SIZE BEFORE MOVING INTO JEFFERSON AND STEPHENS COUNTIES.
STEPHENS AND JEFFERSON COUNTIES WOULD DEAL WITH SEVERE STORMS OFF AND ON AGAIN FROM 11AM TILL ABOUT 5PM AS STORMS REDEVELOED AND BACKBUILT DURING THE DAY. NICKEL SIZE HAIL WAS REPORTED 2 MILES NORTHEAST OF MARLOW AND QUARTER SIZE HAIL REPORTED 15 MILES EAST OF COMANCHE AND 5 MILES NORTH OF RINGLING AS WELL AS IN RINGLING ITSELF. GOLFBALL SIZE HAIL WAS REPORTED 7 MILES EAST OF DUNCAN AND 7 MILES SOUTHEAST OF DUNCAN.
A NEW SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH WAS ISSUED FOR OUR FAR SOUTHEASTERN COUNTIES OF MONTAGUE WISE JACK & PALO PINTO FROM 3PM TILL 8PM. THIS WATCH WAS ISSUED FOR THE THREAT OF ADDITIONAL STORMS FIRING ALONG THE OUTFLOW BOUNDARY AS IT MADE ITS WAY ALONG A LINE FROM ABILIENE TEXAS TO THE DALLAS FORT WORTH METROPLEX THIS WATCH WOULD BE ALLOWED TO EXPIRE AT 7PM. THE STORMS DIED OUT AS THEY MOVED ACROSS THE LAKE TEXHOMA AREA AND TOWARDS THE DALLAS FORT WORTH METROPLEX.
A TORNADO WATCH WAS ISSUED AT 11:30PM FOR OUR FAR NORTHWESTERN COUNTIES OF BECKHAM CHILDRESS COTTLE GREER & HARMON COUNTIES FOR THE THREAT OF STORMS MOVING OUT OF THE TEXAS PANHANDLE WHICH WOULD PLACE A LARGE PORTION OF TEXHOMA IN A SLIGHT RISK OF SEVERE STORMS THE FOLLOWING DAY.
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNINGS WERE ALSO ISSUED FOR GRADY COUNTY ON THIS DAY.
APRIL 13TH MODERATE RISK DAY
ON SATURDAY APRIL 13TH A MODERATE RISK OF SEVERE STORMS WAS FORECAST FOR A LARGE PORTION OF TEXHOMA. THE MODERATE RISK AREA WAS BASICALLY SOUTH OF A LINE FROM ERICK TO CHICKASHA TO HOLDENVILLE OKLAHOMA. AS ALWAYS A SLIGHT RISK OF SEVERE STORMS SURROUNDED THE MODERATE RISK AREA.
AT 12AM A TORNADO WATCH WAS ISSUED FOR OUR FAR WESTERN TEXHOMA COUNTIES OF COTTLE CHILDRESS HARMON GREER & BECKHAM. SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WERE FORECAST TO MOVE OUT OF THE TEXAS PANAHANDLE AND INTO WESTERN NORTH TEXAS AND SOUTHWEST OKLAHOMA. THE TORNADO WATCH WAS IN EFFECT UNTIL 5AM.
SURE ENOUGH THESE STORMS DID MOVE INTO OUR WESTERN COUNTIES AND A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH WAS ISSUED FOR A LARGE PORTION OF TEXHOMA UNTIL 10 AM. THE TORNADO WATCH WAS ALSO EXTENDED UNTIL 10AM BUT NOW INCLUDED FOARD AND HARDEMAN COUNTIES.
SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WOULD BEGIN IN HARMON & GREER COUNTIES WITH QUARTER SIZE HAIL AT MANGUM AND 58 MPH WINDS REPOTED AT GOULD. THESE STORMS WOULD THEN PUSH INTO JACKSON & TILLMAN COUNTIES WHERE QUARTER SIZE HAIL WAS REPORTED AT DUKE AND 65MPH WINDS WERE REPORTED 5MILES NORTHEAST OF MANITOU.
ANOTHER SEVERE STORM WOULD FORM OUT AHEAD OF THESE STORMS IN NORTHERN WICHITA COUNTY. THIS STORM BECAME SUPERCELLULAR AND PRODUCED VERY LARGE HAIL REPORTS FROM BURKBURNETT TO MONTAGUE TEXAS WITH THE LARGEST REPORT COMING IN FROM BURKBURNETT IN WICHITA COUNTY WITH SOFTBALL SIZE HAIL. THIS SAME STORM WOULD ALSO HAVE SIGHNS OF ROTATION BUT NO ORNADO WARNING WAS ISSUED. OTHER HAIL REPORTS FROM THIS STORM INCLUDE BASEBALL SIZE HAIL 6 MILES SOUTHWEST OF GRANDFIELD WHERE DAMAGE TO CARS AND TREES WAS REPORTED. GOLFBALL SIZE HAIL 5 MILES SOUTH OF RANDLETT, QUARTER TO HALF DOLLAR SIZE HAIL AT PETROLIA GOLFBALL SIZE HAIL AT NOCONA ALONG WITH 60 MPH WINDS AT MONTAGUE IN MONTAGUE COUNTY.
OTHER SEVERE WEATHER REPORTS INCLUDED HALF DOLLAR SIZE HAIL 3 MILES SOUTHEAST OF DEVALL AND NICKEL SIZE HAIL AT TEMPLE IN COTTON COUNTY. NICKEL SIZE HAIL 1 MILE SOUTH OF ODELL IN WILBARGER COUNTY. NICKEL SIZE HAIL AT RYAN IN JEFFERSON COUNTY. GOLFBALL SIZE HAIL AT PERRIN IN JACK COUNTY. 65MPH 1 MILE SOUTHWEST OF ARCHER CITY AND 60MPH WINDS AT HOLLIDAY IN ARCHER COUNTY WHERE A ROOF WAS REPORTED BLOWN OFF A MOBILE HOME AS WELL AS TREES AND POWERLINES DOWN AND FINALLY WISE COUNTY REPORTED 60MPH WINDS AT DECATUR.
THE STORMS FORMED DUE TO OUTFLOW BOUNDARIES THAT SPARKED STORMS IN THE PANHANDLE OF TEXAS. THEN MOVED TO THE SOUTHEAST ACROSS THE AREA.AN OUTFLOW BOUNDARY FROM THESE STORMS WOULD PRODUCE SEVERES STORMS IN WEST TEXAS AND SOUTHWEST TEXAS LATE SATURDAY AFTERNOON AND INTO THE NIGHT WITH A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH FOR CHILDRESS COTTLE & KING COUNTIES FROM 3PM TILL 9PM. OTHER SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCHES WERE ISSUED FOR OUR SOUTHEASTERN AND EASTERN COUNTIES ONE FROM 10AM TILL 1PM AND ANOTHER FROM 12PM TILL 4PM.
